On Testimonials

Filed under: Marketing Minute - 26 Mar 2007

Did you ever notice how new products almost always have several testimonials as soon as the product launches?

It’s no surprise really, as product creators often give away their product to select few individuals in exchange for a testimonial.

It’s a good way to get started with a new product, but did you ever wonder why new testimonials aren’t added later on?

Personally, I think testimonials should include a date don’t you? That way you can tell if products are still worthy of praise two months, 6 months or even a year after the product is released.

And did you ever notice how most of the time, the testimonials are from “gooroos” who are well-known online?

While it is a good idea to approach well-known marketers to create joint ventures, why is it that only the gooroos with big mailing lists get to be part of the product testing?

Why aren’t there testimonials added AFTER the product launches from Joe Nobody?

I’ll tell you why…

Most of the time those testimonials are used solely to impress you into purchasing and only people who got the product for free are writing those testimonials!

Of course there’s always the fake testimonials too…those are the ones that have a name and state, but no email address or website link - no way to actually verify that it’s a real
person.

This is a sure way to spot a ‘gooroo’ and junk products.

There are some great products out there and some REAL gurus who are not afraid to add a link to a testimonial so you can follow-up and ask what their experience was with a product. Often first impressions of a product are not so good after 6 months or a year.

If you’re unsure of a product’s real value, don’t be afraid to contact a few people who gave testimonials and find out what they really think about a product or service. Most of them are happy to respond.

Think smart and be successful,
